<Summary of Duties> Reporting to the Senior FPDS Officer (Head of the Media Team), the person in this position assists with the Embassy media relations program, and has in-depth knowledge of Japanese media, and media relations. The person is responsible for a variety of media-related duties including arranging briefings and press interviews, as well as researching and preparing press releases. Able to meet deadlines and work under pressure, the person in this position also assists with media relations activities for high-level functions. She/he is keenly aware of current issues and trends in Japan, as well as opportunities and challenges, can analyse media coverage quickly and effectively, and prepare reports accordingly. The person in this position will be familiar with the work environment of an embassy or international organization, and be able to build and maintain contacts in government, diplomatic, media and other circles, in order to arrange appropriate engagements. *** Please note that the successful candidate must obtain a Reliability Status (security clearance) before the start of employment. Obtaining a security clearance may take at least 12 weeks or more as this is a process done in Canada. <Area of Selection> All qualified candidates meeting the requirements outlined in the Statement of Merit Criteria, including Embassy employees, spouses/dependents of Canada-based staff. <ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS> Candidates will initially be screened against the Essential Qualifications relating to education, language* and experience. Candidates must clearly demonstrate when applying to the position how they meet each of these essential qualifications. *Language will be assessed further during the process. Education: Candidates will be required to provide proof of the completion of their education. - Bachelor’s degree from a recognized university with a major in any discipline or an acceptable combination of education, training and/or experience. Language: - Fluency in English (written and spoken) - Fluency in Japanese (written and spoken) Experience: Minimum of two years experience in at least three (3) of the following areas: - Researching, writing and preparing text for publication, as well as editing and proof-reading various documents; - Arranging briefings, organizing interviews and meetings; - Conducting media relations activities; - Providing strategic communications advice; - Analyzing and summarizing media coverage of various issues and reporting accordingly. <RATED REQUIREMENTS> The Rated Requirements are part of the essential qualifications and are relating to knowledge, abilities and competencies. Methods of assessment for rated requirements may include, but are not limited to, a written examination, an oral interview (online pre-recorded/live or in-person), role-play, practical tests, presentations and/or psychometric assessment. Knowledge: - Knowledge of the media markets in Japan and media relations; - Current issues, trends, opportunities and challenges in Japan. Competencies: - Interpersonal skills - Initiative - Judgement - Client focus - Accuracy and attention to details - Adaptability and flexibility Abilities: - Ability to communicate effectively orally and written in English and Japanese - Ability to set priorities, meet deadlines and work under pressure - Ability to analyse, evaluate and make decisions - Ability to work independently and in a team Asset Qualifications: Preference may be given to candidates who meet the Asset Qualifications. Where applicable, candidates must clearly demonstrate how they meet any asset qualifications. - Fluency in written and spoken French - Experience working in a diplomatic mission or an international organization in a similar position. Conditions of Employment: Conditions of employment must be met or complied with before being appointed to a particular position, and are to be maintained throughout the employment while being the incumbent of this position. - Valid work authorization: Ability to obtain and hold a valid work authorization covering the entire employment period. - Security screening: Obtain and maintain a Reliability Status (security level) which includes a criminal and credit background check from the Government of Canada covering the entire employment period. - Other conditions of employment: The successful candidate must: Health assessment may be requested at the discretion of the Head of Mission Special Request from Mission / Additional Comments: Please note that the successful candidate must obtain a Reliability Status (security clearance) before the start of employment.
